Day one of the 2017 Great Southern Supreme Merino (GSSM) show and sale in Canberra opened the judging of the sale ram classes in their various types.
An August/September 2014 drop March shorn ram bred in the Merryville stud at Boorowa and sired by the Brilliant Monarch Super syndicate was awarded the Sid and Bob Walters Memorial for the Champion sale ram.
With a fleece with mean micron measurement 16.8 and weighing 123.5kg, he was given the nod by judges James Collins, Mt Bute stud, Linton, Victoria, Rod Kent, Kurrajong Park stud, Delungra and Andy McLean, Haddon Rig stud, Warren.
Reserve Champion was awarded to another superfine ram exhibited by Chris Clonan, Alfoxton stud, Armidale.
Judge James Collins noted the strength of the sale ram classes.
“We had a very good competition among the sale rams, particularly at the superfine end, from which the Champion and Reserve Champion came,” Mr Collins said.
“The Poll section also very good with Grassy Creek exhibiting a top ram.”
