The helmsman auction system has been a strong point of Glenellerslie Herefords for a number of years and Tuesday’s sale proved no different for the Adelong stud.
With a focus on breeding “true to type Herefords” (horned) and a strong enthusiasm for Herefords and the continued recognition of horned Herefords, the Smith family were happy with the sale’s result.
A total of 33 Bulls were offered with 27 selling for an average price of $4741.
Dehorned bulls lead the way with 17 of the 22 offered sold for an average price of $5088 including the $10,000 top-price bull Glenellerslie Paymaster 2.
While poll bulls averaged $4150 for 10 of the 11 bulls offered and reached a top of $6500 for Glenellerslie Paterson.
Gordon Moon, Wulgulmerang, Victoria, purchased the top-price bull - a Warwick Court Electric son who weighed in at 890 kilograms and measured 103 square centimetre eye muscle area (EMA), 11 and 8 millimetres of rump and rib fat and 39cm scrotal circumference.
Selected for his figures particularly milk and growth as well as fertility traits by Mr Moon, who runs a self-replacing herd of 200 plus Hereford cows selling progeny as weaners through the calf sales.
Long-term supporters Ross and Marion Trethowan, “Lindawarra”, Cookardinia, purchased two dehorned bulls Glenellerslie Phelps at $8250 and Glenellerslie Pancho 2 for $5500 both Kaludah Kyle G218 whose sons were the talk amongst the dehorned pens.
P.C and D.M Moon, Wulgulmerang, Vic, purchased a dehorned Braybrook Grenadier son for $7250.
Purchasing the top-price poll bull a Debarry Chisel son for $6500 was Karoonda Hereford stud, Gelantipy, Vic.
Adding to the Trethowan’s six other purchasers bought multiples including W.P and S Roche, Adelong, T.E and M.C Woodgate, Buchan, Vic, Timberlane Pastoral Company, Tallangatta, Vic, R.N and L.M Bethune, Mitta Mitta, Vic, and Hartvale Pty Ltd, “Hartvale”, Holbrook.
Glenellerslie principal Ross Smith, said he was happy with the result.
“There was strong support from long-term repeat clientele,” Mr Smith said. “This was also assisted by by new purchasers.”
