A very warm day for the southern tablelands near the end of February saw 950 adult cattle yarded for a special sale at Braidwood on Thursday.
Cattle producers were looking to the sky and wondering when the autumn break will occur, but the typical dry end of summer didn’t stop committed buyers from purchasing suitable pens of well-bred stock to satisfy their needs.
The yarding consisted principally of Angus and black baldy types with the odd pen of Herefords.
There were three main vendors, two of whom were downsizing their herds for commercial reasons, and offering quality cows with calves or scanned in calf.
Top price for cows and calves was $2800 paid for the pen of 16 Angus, two and half year and PTIC to calve July/August sold on account Gavin and Stephanie Rhodes, “The Ranch”, Braidwood.
They had 300 head on offer, and other good sales included $2600 paid for 10 black baldy two and half year cows with calves and PTIC to calve July/August, along with 14 Angus cows, PTIC to Angus bull sold for $2270.
Ian and Noelene Cargill, “Billaglen”, Braidwood, had 400 Angus females for sale as they were consolidating their business interests, and received $1760 for their pen of 10 cows, Millah Murrah-blood, five and six year and scanned in calf.
Their other good sales included 15 Angus cows, to calf in August sold for $1700, along with 24 2015 drop heifers, scanned to calve in August/September sold for $1200 and 57 rising two year heifers, PTIC sold for $1025.
Rodney and Naomi Royds, “Jinglemoney”, Braidwood, sold 21 Dunoon-blood Angus heifers, July/August 2015 drop and scanned in calf for $1705, two other pens, same description selling 21 for $1625 and 20 for $1375 respectively.
The heifers were surplus to their requirements as the Royds family always join more than they need and sell the balance.
They also sold 33 Angus cows which have just been weaned, but are PTIC for $1630.
Their was a limited offering of weaner steers available, with Gavin and Stephanie Rhodes, “The Ranch”, Braidwood, selling Angus and black baldy steers six months to top of $1190 for the pen of 13 Angus weighing 310kg.
Other sales included 10 Angus steers, 271kg sold for $1084, nine black baldy, 280kg sold for $1064 and 14 black baldy steers, 232kg sold for $977.
Their top Angus heifers sold for $1016 for 298kg while 20 black baldy heifers, 245kg sold for $816.
Cattle went to Cooma, Gundagai, Goulburn, Moss Vale, Riverina, south coast and local areas, WJ Gibbs and Co, agent Greg Darmody describing the sale as an “excellent result for good cattle.”
“It was good to see buyers looking for quality in the cattle and prepared to pay for it,” he said.
WJ Gibb and Co, Schute Bell Badgery and Lumby, and Landmark conducted the sale.
