Top quality whiteface bulls overcame a poor attendance at Centennial Herefords annual bull sale held on-property at Holbrook last Monday.
Nine bulls sold for an average price of $6833 reaching a top of $13,500 from an offering of 25.
Reaching the top money was the 900 kilogram Centennial Wallace L088 a scurred July born son of Glentrevor Wallace H427 secured by Geoff Johnston, Walpa, Victoria.
Mr Johnston runs a self-replacing Hereford cow herd selling steers wither as weaners or grown steers depending on both climatic and market conditions.
After using Stock and Land Beef Week to access bulls from a number of herds, Mr Johnston was impressed by the draft of whiteface bulls at Centennial and returned to what he considered the pick of the draft as well as a second sire Centennial Flasher L077 – a June poll son of Bowen Flasher F140 for $5000.
“I am looking for bulls that are structurally sound, have good muscle pattern as well as a good thick skin,” Me Johnston said.
“Being mindful of 400 day growth as well as milk and fertility traits for the self replacing herd.”
J.J. Honner and Sons, Minlacowie Poll Herefords, “Rosecrea”, Brentwood, paid $10,000 for their selection of the catalogue Centennial Wallace L083 another July born bull by Glentrevor Wallace H427 who is the leading calving ease sire on Hereford Breedplan.
While strong supporter of the Centennial program Martin Austin, “Jemalong”, Coolah, was again active purchasing Centennial Wallace L039 another scurred son of Glentrevor Wallace H427.
H.M. and G.M. Lee, Guys Forest, Vic, purchased Centennial Anzac L061 for $7000 a son of the renowned sire Allendale Anzac E114.
R and C Pitson, “Carinya”, Culcairn, secured two bulls at $4000 per each.
While P.R.E and B.J. Wilkinson, “Yallowin”, Humula paid $5000 for each of their two.
The helmsman auction was conducted by Landmark.
