A group of students from St Stanislaus College, Bathurst, or as the school is more fondly known, St Stannies, were kept educated and entertained during the 14th Annual ANZ Agribusiness Taralga Region Flock Ewe Competition.
The idea came from the competition convenors, who invited district schools to participate in a junior judging section run in conjunction with the ewe competition.
About 10 students from Yr 8 to Yr 12 visited each of the presenting eight flocks along with mentor and guide, Merino breeder, Aaron Granger, “Rogara”, Goulburn.
The students were asked to judge three of the flocks and have a go at picking the ‘top five’.
They were also exposed to agricultural industry pathways with small group and individual presentations made by wool brokers, stock and station agents and financial institutions.
This year’s Taralga judges were George Merriman of Merryville Merino stud, Boorowa and Gary Cox of Langdene Merino stud, Dunedoo.
From the eight flocks that entered this year’s competition, a top five were selected with the winner being announced this coming Sunday at the annual Taralga show.
The top five, in no particular order, are Eastleigh Pastoral, Golspie, managed by David and Estelle Roberts, on Boudjah blood, Chris and Stephanie Croker, “Ayrston”, Golspie with their Thalabah bloodline flock, Brian Corby, “Bunjie”, Taralga with Carrabungla blood ewes, Bernard and Barbara Croker, “Burralyn”, Golspie, with their Winyar blood ewes and Geoff Croker, “Meadowdrive”, Golspie, also with Winyar blood ewes.
The top two flocks from the Taralga competition will go into the Southern Tablelands Regional Championship to be held on Friday, March 17.
