Excitement builds for Sydney Royal

Running from April 6 to 19, coinciding with NSW school holidays, crowds are expected to be even larger this year at the Sydney Showground at Sydney Olympic Park.

From right across Australia, Sydney Royal competitions attract more than 40,000 entries seeking recognition as the best of the best.

For Sydney Royal competitors, a win is recognition of dedication, ability, uncompromising diligence and sheer hard work, and a win provides a springboard to increase returns.

The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) works tirelessly throughout the year to preserve and display the nearly 200 years of show heritage.

“We get one shot every year at entertaining and educating our domestic and international visitors,” RAS general manager Murray Wilton said. 

“The fortnight each year when the country comes to the city is our opportunity to educate about the importance of the agriculture sector while making it fun and engaging.

“In 2017, we are confident we have the formula just right.”

For the first time in 65 years the Grand Parade will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, April 11.

This year the cattle feature breed is Limousin, with the auction on Saturday, April 8.

The beef cattle, purebred and trade steers and heifers bump in from Sunday, April 2, and bump out on Wednesday, April 12, to make way for the changeover to Dairy Cattle.

Beef cattle breed judging begins on Friday, April 7, after the hoof and hook competitions.

Dairy cattle arrive on Thursday, April 13, for judging to begin on Good Friday.

The sheep feature breed is Dorper and White Dorper, while wool feature breed is Merino Strong Wool.

Fleece judging takes place on Monday, April 3.

Meat and dual purpose sheep bump in from Tuesday, April 4, and bump out on Saturday, April 8.

Merinos arrive that day for judging until bumping out on Wednesday, April 12.

Sheep and fleece displays will continue for a further week.
