A large crowd gathered for a working dog auction at the sidelines of the NSW Sheep Dog Workers Association championships at Molong on Saturday.
Beginning at noon, candidates for sale worked a small flock of sheep under the discerning eyes of buyers.
Just four out of eight dogs offered for sale sold, but post-sale negotiations were under way. Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon and Co. auctioneer Richard Maunder, who generally works out of Forbes, said most dogs reached their reserves, or if they didn’t, came close.
The top-priced dog – Brazier’s Izzy, an 18-month-old kelpie bitch – sold for $3600 to John Salter, “Greyden”, Manildra. A four-month-old border collie bitch, who looked sharp in the ring, sold for $650.
Border collie Heath’s Cleaver (pictured on our cover), owned by Andrew Heath, who is originally from Stanthorpe, Qld, but is currently managing a property near Molong, kept his cluster of sheep in good trim, was passed in at $2400, and later sold for $3000.
