STATEMENTS like: “It’s off the planet, and as dear as I have seen across the board,” could be heard at the Wagga Livestock Marketing Centre during the sheep and lamb market on Thursday.
Traditionally the last sale before the Easter break prompts plenty of interest and lamb producers can expect a spike in prices.
For Bethungra vendor Bill Muller, “Nunlong” there was certainly plenty to smile about after he sold 59 second cross Poll Dorset Lambs for a high of $179.
The lambs had been finished on lucerne and were recently shorn and presented in exactly the type of condition buyers were seeking.
“I was very pleased with the result,” Mr Muller said.
“It is a really good yarding but there is a lack of numbers, in general, so buyers are looking to fill orders,” he said.
A second line of Mr Muller’s lambs made an impressive $170 and he was encouraged by the result.
He was also hoping to sell some more lambs in the coming weeks.
“I think it is possible that the market will only get dearer,” he said.
Meat and Livestock Australia market reporter Leann Dax said it was apparent that the market was getting dearer as the sale went along.
She said the competition from restockers was really pushing values higher.
