YEARLING steers topped at $1420 and cows with calves made to $2000 in a 1450 head yarding at Dubbo store cattle sale last Friday.
Good quality steers sold very well on a firm market although quality dictated prices with better lines receiving buyers’ attention to hold a fraction higher, according to P.T Lord Dakin agent, Paul Dakin, Dubbo.
“Secondary lines met with weaker demand from the smaller numbers of buyers as people get ready for the Easter break,” he said.
Among the yarding which attracted some 750 head more than the previous sale weaner steers sold from $550 to $1110 to average $830 or 390 cents a kilogram among the 320 head presented.
Tops were European Union Poll Hereford weaners from Mutooroo Pastoral Company, Mulyungarie Station, Broken Hill, making from $1050 to $1070.
Yearling steers numbering 230 head sold from $770 to $1420 with 160 Hampshire Station, Merriwa, spring 2015 drop Angus steers of Eaglehawk blood, selling from $1005 to the sale top at $1420.
Station manager, John Halsted, said this draft were half of the drop he held over after selling the others a month ago fearing the dry season would hang on longer. Some 1200 cows are joined on the property which also runs 14,000 Merinos of Roseville Park blood including 5000 ewes.
Heifer weaners being the largest in numbers at 606 head sold from $405 to $990 which included Mutooroo heifers selling from $755 to $990. The heifer weaners averaged $740 or 324c/kg.
Hampshire Station sold 67 unjoined Angus heifers being of the same drop as the steers at $950 each.
A single pen of PTIC Angus heifers sold at $1450 each.
Cows and cows with calves were in very limited supply with only 76 units on offer.
The best of the cow/calves were a small line of Angus with their first calves at foot selling at $2000 a unit.
The balance of the cows with calves sold from $1370 for a very light single black baldy to $1900 a unit for Shorthorn cows with large calves at foot.
PTIC cows sold from $1025 to $1660 a head for Angus cows.
The Pulbar Family, “Hereford Park”, Nevertire, sold 10 Santa Gertrudis/Angus cross cows, eight to nine years, PTIC to Santa Gertrudis bulls, at $1660 each.
The Braid family, “Cronga Park”, Euchareena, sold Angus heifers with young first calves at foot for $2000 a unit.
Heaney family, “Tooloon South”, Coonamble, sold Angus and Angus cross calves, six to eight months, to $1110 and $896 average.
The Hampshire Station steer drop averaged $1309.
Lyle Woods, “Lambing Creek”, Hargraves, sold 11 Shorthorn cows with older calves at foot at $1900 a unit.
