A YOUNG Brangus bull from the states Central West has pipped a Gelbvieh heifer that traveled from Western Australia for the Sydney Royals best-of-the-rest breed competition.
There were only six entries across the entire Other Recognised Breeds category: four Gelbviehs, one Brangus and one Lincoln Red, none older than 14 months, meaning the junior male and female winners were immediately crowned champion of their sex and pitted against each other for the big prize.
The best overall exhibit winner was a 12-month-old Brangus bull from Wellington named RDM Extra Style, owned by RDM Angus stud operators the Wheeler family.
He was sired by R2 Extra Style 880P, from DMM Miss Essence 63W.
Judge Caitlin Berecy said RDM Extra Style was a complete package, with excellent shape down the hindquarter.
Handler and owner Rachael Wheeler said he had it all where it counted.
I really like this bull, hes got a huge amount of weight for his age, Ms Wheeler said. Hes for sale, but barring anything there well head up to Brisbane (for the Ekka).
Runner-up overall and champion female was Glendale Just Candy M31 from the Glendale Gelbvieh Stud at Serpentine, just south of Perth.
At 11 months Just Candy M31 was the second youngest of the four Gelbviehs that Barry and Michelle Fleming brought over from the West Coast.
Ms Berecry said the three Glendale Gelbviehs entered in the junior female section were like peas in a pod, with Just Candy M31 offering the best combination, extra softness and an excellent head carriage.
A 13-month old Red Lincoln female, Ferndale Merinda, owned by Bega Valley breeders Guy and Jenny Bennett, placed fourth in the female class.
