This year was the second time Sam took part in the competition, having placed fourth at last years event.
Hes the son of Steve and Liz Phillips, the current owners of Yarrawonga Merino and Poll Merino stud which was founded by Don and Thea Phillips.
This year Angus Denholm came second in the competition, with Kieran Smith in third place. Fourth placegetter was Laura Finlay and fifth was Tessa Coddington.
Last years champion was Georgia Waters.
Each competitor had to judge four animals one class of ewes and one of rams. They then had to give an oral presentation outlining the reasoning behind their placings.
While they were busy judging the animals, the competition judge assessed their judging and handling technique.
The entrants were each scored out of 200 points.
