A family’s long history of selling at the Carcoar weaner sales has cemented their reputation for supplying hefty and productive Poll Hereford cattle.
Well-known cattle producers Maria, Alf and Rick Cocco, entrusted their Poll Hereford operation to manager’s Jim and Rebecca Roberts almost a year ago to carry on the vision to produce quality cattle destined for the local saleyard.
Mr Roberts said this season he retained 100 heifers to add to the 525 breeding cow base at "Kareela", Oberon.
Based on Warratah and Rutherford blood, the current herd are exuding the traits of Llandillo Poll Hereford bulls at Bathurst.
“When I select a bull I look for smooth shoulders, a straight back and Low birth weight – basically a good shaped bull overall,” Mr Roberts said.
“Selecting a Poll Hereford bull is not too tricky because the breed already has the quiet temperament which is so easy to work with,” he said.
“They are known for being good converters and growing quickly.”
Aiming to market about 500 weaners each season, cattle are joined in late October for eight weeks to produce a July calf.
After weaning at seven months of age, the cattle hit the weaner sales at about 300 kilograms.
“We are now aiming to sell all in one hit at the weaner sales because the Cocco family have been attending them for so many years – buyers have trust in their cattle so that definitely helps to get the bids on sale day,” Mr Roberts said.
