What YLAD Living Soils has been promoting over the past 10 years is now just hitting the headlines.
Biophysicist from UNE School of Environmental and Rural Science, Iain Young wrote ‘soil microbes are now in the spotlight as the key to new productivity breakthroughs for agriculture.’
Rhonda Daly, co-founder and owner of YLAD Living Soils, said that 15 years ago soil microbiology was rarely spoken about and no value placed on the huge role it plays in soil efficiency.
“People thought we were crazy when we set up our new business promoting the use of biological fertilisers,” Rhonda said.
“As the name suggests, working with and understanding soil biology is the key stone of our approach.
“When we talk soil biology, we are not just talking earthworms, as important as they are.
“We are looking down the microscope into the universe of micro-organisms.
“In a handful of fertile soil, there are more organisms than all the humans that have ever lived on earth.
“If farmers are to benefit from active soil biology, certain management and fertility practices will need to be adopted.
“Practices such as no-till, rotational grazing, stubble retention are a part of the picture, however, it is time for the focus to turn to rejuvenating soil microbiology.
“YLAD Living Soils offer a high quality fertiliser known as YLAD Humus Compost that provides the perfect balance of airspace, nutrients and water-holding capacity to maintain a quality growing environment for soil microbes.
“It is produced using a 10 week aerobic controlled cycle creating an optimal environment for aerobic microbes to flourish.
“This product builds a microbial environment in which beneficial microbes thrive and multiply, influencing the physical and chemical aspects of the soil,” she said.
Rhonda and Bill Daly bought Humus Technology to Australia over 10 years ago and have helped thousands of farmers incorporate it into their current farming practices.
