Quality steers and heifers looked after themselves at the Angus and cross weaner sale at Glen Innes on Friday, April 28, with bidding from backgrounders and breeders uniting to create demand in excess of supply.
The strength of heifers, particularly those more than 250kg, drew the market returning averages of $955 at 249kg or 383c/kg. Steers went 421c/kg at 276kg to return $1162.
Gordon and Sally Wollen, ‘Buckandor’, Red Range, were awarded champion pen of weaner steers as judged by Glencoe backgrounder Paul MacRae. They sold 29 at 362kg for 418c/kg to make $1534. Another pen of 35 weighing 338kg sold for 428c/kg to make $1449.
Exactly 2730 head were yarded with the sale hosted by Colin Say and Co, Newberry te Velde Carige Agencies, Landmark and Elders. Cattle were sold as far away as the North West slopes, Upper Hunter and Central West.
Angus weaner steers 300-350kg sold between 350-405c/kg; steers 250-300kg for 374-437c/kg; steers 200-250kg for 376-445c/kg; steers under 200kg for 401-485c/kg.
Angus weaner heifers 300-350kg sold for 346-409c/kg;250-300kg for 330-411c/kg; 200-250kg for 370-401c/kg and under 200kg for 393-408c/kg.
Cate and Rob Wheatley, ‘Rosedale’, Deepwater, sold their champion pen of 62 quiet heifers straight off their mothers, 306kg, for 406c/kg to average $1244. Their steers averaged 324kg made 409c/kg for $1328.
“We’ve had a good autumn which shot up the weight,” said Mr Wheatley.
Allan Fletcher, ‘Glen Roy’, Furracabad, with his brothers Ross and Colin, presented three pens of Angus weaner steers with Ascot and Glen Isa bloodlines, 138 in total, some of which placed third in the judging and which sold to a top of 418c/kg at 341kg to realise $1425. Another pen sold for 420c/kg at 294kg to make $1235. “Those prices were better than I expected,” he said. “That is certainly a ‘wow’ factor.”
