JOINING forces to promote Simmental and Red Angus beef cattle has paid dividends for the Simmental and Red Angus breed societies who conducted their inaugural Ausmectin National Show and Sale at Dubbo showground last week.
Nineteen Simmentals sold at auction for an 80 per cent clearance from 24 head with 11 bulls topping at $12,000 twice to average $8455 and eight female selling to $11,500 to average $7563.
Leading the bull sales was the Woonallee stud of Tom and Lizzy Baker, Millicent, South Australia, who sold three junior bulls to the sale top of $12,000 twice and another at $11,000 to average $11,667.
The two sale-toppers both black bulls, included the junior champion Woonallee Mafia (P), by Woonallee Humdinger, and Woonallee Matador M125 (P), by Lancaster Juggler, selling to the Gill family, “Alexander Downs”, Merriwa.
Mafia weighed 714 kilograms at rising 15 months with an eye muscle area (EMA) of 114 square centimetres and scrotal circumference of 44cm.
The other, reserve junior champion Woonallee Miller Chill M449 (P), by LFE Beer Money 811Y, weighing 708kg with an 112sqcm EMA at the same age, sold at $11,000 to Jarrad Bonanno, Norman Park Simmentals, Clarendon.
A junior female topped the sale at $11,500 for Vaughan and Sarah Campagnolo, Savannah stud, Myponga, SA. Savannah Zoe M01 (P), by DCR Mr Moon Shine X102, was purchased by Luke Adams, Loaderry Simmentals, Londonderry.
Mr Adams established his stud seven years ago and runs 25 breeders. He said he would let the heifer down before entering her into an embryo transfer program.
The Campagnolos sold three females for a $9167 average and one bull at $4000.
Reserve junior champion female, Savannah Eloise (P) by Savannah Jon Bon Jovi sold at $9000 to Kirk Cattle Company, Mundubbera, Qld.
Two females including the junior champion sold at $8000 each for Shannon Lawlor, Ausbred Simmentals, Kurmond.
Ausbred Princess Bambi (P), by Mr NLC Upgrade, and Ausbred Madame Bambi (P), by the same sire, were purchased by Landmark, Dubbo, to an undisclosed buyer.
Mt Ararat Simmentals operated by John Leek at Nar Nar Goon, Victoria, sold four bulls to $10,000 and $7500 average with the top money being paid by an AuctionsPlus bidder for the 16-18 months class winner, Mt Ararat Jet 2015 sired by Woonallee Jetstream, while two others sold at $8000 each.
Senior and grand champion bull, Hobbs Livestock Captain MorganL8 (P), sired by SVS Captain Morgan 11Z, shown by David and Ashleigh Hobbs, Molong, sold at $9000 to Greg Lithgow, Chinchillaq, Queensland, who also paid $8000 for Round-Em-Up Money Maker (P), by GCF Mr Amigo.
Genetic sales
Keen interest in Simmental genetics was evident during the auction when six semen lots grossed $14,960 with records being made when four straws from the black bull, SVS Captain Morgan 11Z (P) sold at $440 each by Shannon Lawlor, Ausbred stud, Kurmond, to Sandra Lang-Schilg, Bywong Park Simmentals, Burrumbuttock.
Another record was established for a traditional bull, JB CDN Hennessy 5005, when five straws sold at $1100 each for Joel Stuart of High Rise Livestock, Strathalbyn, SA, to Cashmere Cattle Company.
An embryo from Woonallee Kathie B111 by Starwest Pol Blueprint, also sold for a record price of $5000 when sold for Tom and LIzzy Baker, Woonallee stud, to Valley Creek Simmentals, Bowral.
Fifteen embryos grossed $19,400.
