New South Wales grain growers will be offered insights into how they can maximise crop yields in irrigated farm operations as part of the Grains Research Development Corporation (GRDC) Updates in Yanco.
The annual one-day updates are being held at the Yanco Agricultural Institute Conference Centre on July 26.
Nick Poole from FAR Australia will be presenting the latest research int o the yield potential of irrigated cereals, highlighting the challenges and explaining how growers can utilise a visual lodging risk guide to aid their decision making regarding the use of plant growth regulators.
NSW Department of Primary Industries researcher Sam North will offer insights into how crops grown on different soil types perform under irrigation and discuss how growers can influence yield by managing layout and waterlogging and matching time of sowing and variety to soil type.
While Nuffield scholar and grower Leigh Vial will discuss how to get the best value from nitrogen in an irrigated operation, this report includes results from a mid-row banding trial.
Other topics on the Update’s agenda include: a management checklist for maximising yield in irrigated canola, as well as the latest research into herbicide resistance and emerging problem weeds. Spray specialist Craig Day will also offer tips on boom spray technology to improve coverage and minimise spray drift.
GRDC Senior Regional Manager North Jan Edwards said the annual Updates were designed to provide growers with practical, relevant information in response to ongoing and emerging on-farm challenges.
“The GRDC is committed to providing growers and their advisers with best practice advice that enhances productivity, and offers efficient, cost effective guides for the use of inputs, as well as management and control of weed, disease and pest issues,” she said.
“I would encourage growers to come along to the Updates and take advantage of this information sharing, because from our perspective it is equally important to hear what’s happening on-farm and how we can tailor our research, development and extension to address these challenges.”
The GRDC Update at Yanco on July 26 starts with registrations from 8.30am and runs until 1pm, followed by lunch.
The GRDC will also be holding research Updates at Moama Bowling Club, Moama, on July 27, and Grenfell Bowling Club, Grenfell, on August 3.
