In the Merino sale pens during the 140th annual Sheep and Wool Show at Bendigo, two rams from NSW studs sold for equal top sale price of $32,000.
Wal and George Merriman, Merryville stud, Boorowa sold one to Rockbank Merino stud, Victoria, and Garry Cox, Langdene Merinos, Dunedoo, sold one to Ian Greenwood, “Macoolama”, Yass.
Chris Clonan, Alfoxton Merinos, Armidale sold one ram for $30,000 to Tasmanian interests.
It is a good time to be in sheep and wool, according to Ross McGauchie, president Australian Sheepbreeders Association.
“Our figures show another record crowd over the three days and we had our ram sale on Sunday for the first time and it was very successful,” he said.
“The show highlights the value in connecting with people other than those who are sheep producers.”
Seed stock producers from NSW had a very successful showing of their preferred breeds during the show.
Most significant result among the British Breeds was the awarding of Supreme Australian Prime Lamb exhibit to Matt, Heidi and Rex Sherwood, Wollondale Hampshire Downs, Towrang for their Champion Hampshire Downs ram.
The Sherwood family also exhibited the Supreme Australian Prime Lamb group of one ram and two ewes, led by their champion ram, with the ewes having been awarded champion and reserve champion for their breed.
The Frost family, Hillden Poll Dorsets, Bannister paraded the supreme exhibit for the breed, and Jamie Buerckner, Bauer Border Leicesters, Ariah Park showed the supreme exhibit.
Greg Good, Bowen Suffolks, Millthorpe, showed supreme exhibit with his ram, while David Leischke, Otto Suffolks, Walla Walla had champion ewe.
In the Merino section, Garry Cox, Langdene Merinos, Dunedoo, paraded the group of three rams and two ewes winning the Lionel Weatherly Trophy.
Mr Cox was also awarded the best exhibit of three Merino sheep, along with reserve grand champion finewool ram..
Grand champion and reserve grand champion fine/medium wool ewe was awarded to Hamish McLaren, Nerstane Merinos, Woolbrook, along with reserve grand champion for his fine/medium wool ram.
Ross Wells, Willandra Merinos, Jerilderie, showed the grand and reserve grand champion unhoused rams: along with reserve grand champion strong wool ewe.
Margie Pye, Calga Dohne stud, Coonamble exhibited the reserve grand champion Dohne ram.
