IN EARLY September the next major fund raising event for the Monaro Committee for Cancer Research takes to the stage.
With a cast that includes members of the MCCR committee, Tim Firth’s “Calendar Girls” is to be performed at the Cooma Multi-Function-Centre on September 8 and 9. The play debuted in London’s West End in 2009 and is built around a group of variously aged women who set out to raise money for charity.
They hit upon the idea of a calendar with a difference; not for them the cute kitten or puppy theme, nor the stately homes one, but rather pictures of themselves – “au naturel”.
MCCR has a reputation for providing high quality local entertainment – in the last decade the group has staged several highly successful cabaret theatre type shows – the committee is currently engaged in rehearsals for the September performances and has already completed the calendar that will be launched on opening night.
For many of the cast members, both the play and the calendar are very new ground, but in the hands of Jane Keegan, an experienced thespian from the Cooma Little Theatre and talented local photographer Mel O’Brien, plans are well advanced.
Apart from income streams via ticket sales for the show and the calendar, the public is being asked to choose a favourite “girl” and to support her financially with profiles presented in the local media.
