Poll Herefords were the buyers’ choice at the Tummel on-property bull sale near Walcha on Tuesday.
Thirteen from 15 Poll Hereford bulls sold to a top of $11,000 and averaged $6154, whilst 16 of the 28 Hereford bulls sold to top at $8000 and average $4438.
Richard and Robyn Gordan, “West Lynne”, Guyra, paid $11,000 for the last bull in the draft L108.
The rising two-year-old Tummel herd bull sired by Yalgoo Wrench H108 weighed 720 kilograms and measured a P8 of 8mm, 7mm on the rib, an eye muscle area (EMA) of 105 square centimeters and an intramuscular fat (IMF) of three per cent.
The Gordons purchased three bulls from the sale to average $8000 and were looking for low birth weight bulls to compliment their commercial poll hereford herd.
“We join 120 females annually and supply the weaner markets,” said Mr Gordon.
In the Herefords, Greg and Christine Healey, Black Springs, secured a Tummel Herd bull L356 for $8000.
The Nunniong Jet G118 son weighed 860kg, measured a P8 of 8mm, 5mm on the rib, and EMA of 123cm2 and an IMF of 4.4pc.
The Healeys (on their first visit to Tummel) said L356 had “plenty of growth and was a very sirey bull” and plan to use the bull to breed commercial bulls for their own herd.
“We like to put a bit of Horn blood back into the Poll herd and bring a bit of growth back into them,” said Mr Healey.
The Lockyer family “Northwood”, Walcha, secured three bulls on the day for $4000 each.
The sale was settled by Elders Walcha and Pitt Sons Walcha with Tamworth Auctioneer, Paul Dooley, controlling the bids.
