AN IMPRESSIVE average of $10,633 was achieved at the 33rd annual Glenavon Angus bull sale at Guyra on Monday, with all 101 bulls offered selling to a top of $19,000.
Stud principals, Richard and Prue Post, sold two-year-old and yearling bulls to a packed sale ring, with cattle going to commercial and stud clients in NSW, Queensland and Victoria.
The two-year-old bulls averaged $10,551, while the yearlings – offered for the first time at Glenavon – topped at $15,000 and averaged $11,143.
Repeat client James Hooke, “Skibo”, Gloucester, took home the top bull, paying $19,000 for Glenavon L229, a son of Glenavon F244 and grandson of Ardrossan Equator.
The 23-month-old bull weighed 960 kilograms, had a scrotal circumference of 42 centimetres, and estimated breeding values (EBVs) of +57, +98 and +143 for 200-, 400- and 600-day weight, and +130 for mature cow weight.
Mr Hooke was focused on structure when selecting the bull.

Glenavon L154, another Ardrossan Equator grandson, sold for $18,000 to James Harris, “Abington”, Uralla, who also purchased Glenavon L291, for $16,000.
L154 was a 24-month-old, 942kg bull with a 44cm scrotal circumference and EBVs of +47, +83 and +116 for 200-, 400- and 600-day weight, while L154, a 23-month-old son of Te Mania Emperor E343 bull Glenavon H011, weighed 908kg, had a scrotal circumference of 43cm and EBVs of +3.5 for birthweight and +45, +81 and +115 for 200-, 400- and 600-day weight.
Sam and Erica Ulrick, “Springfield”, Guyra, took home two of the top bulls, paying $18,000 and $16,000 for two Ardrossan Equator grandsons, Glenavon L171 and Glenavon L294.
Glenavon L171, a 24-month-old by Glenavon G238, weighed 986kg with a scrotal circumference of 41cm, and had EBVs of +51, +91, and +133 for 200-, 400- and 600-day weight, and +124 for mature cow weight.
L294 was a 23-month-old son of Glenavon F244 weighing 944kg and had a scrotal circumference of 45cm, with EBVs of +54, +95 and +136 for 200-, 400- and 600-day weight and +129 for mature cow weight.
Rockvale Farms, Guyra, was the volume buyer, taking 10 bulls topping at $13,000 and averaging $10,300.
Ranken Brothers, Spring Ridge, bought seven bulls averaging $8714, GH Bundella purchased six bulls averaging $8500, and Citriodora Pty Ltd took home five bulls for an average of $9400. Clevedon Investments, Armidale, and Union Agriculture, Kyabra Station, Kentucky, each purchased four bulls, averaging $8750 and $9250.
The sale was settled by Davidson Cameron and Company, with Luke Scicluna and Tom Tanner sharing the rostrum.
