THE 11th annual production sale at Waitara Angus, Trangie, saw a large crowd of return buyers to see a top price of $18,000 with a 100 per cent clearance. Fourteen bulls sold for more than $10,000.
Averaging $8814, the 43 bulls sold to buyers who were predominantly from the surrounding regions.
Top priced bull, Waitara 292 Liberator L16(AI), a July 2015, 948-kilogram son of JMB Traction 292, has estimated breeding values (EBVs) within the top one pc of the breed. He was sold through a phone bid taken by Marcus Bruce from Landmark Wilson Russ at Warren.
Stephen Palmer, Kyeamba Downs, Wagga Wagga, purchased the bull after previewing him the week prior to the sale.
“I liked him as he was a big bull with a lot of muscle and very free moving, I saw a video and photos of him and he is everything that was seen,” Mr Palmer said.
“I use Breedplan to make my purchase decisions and he is in the top one per cent in growth, carcase and eye muscle.”
Mr Palmer plans on using him in his 500 cow commercial enterprise using both artificial insemination (AI) and natural breeding practices.
David Dywer, Dywers Transport Warren, who was assisted by Stuart Russ, a bull selection consultant from Warren, purchased two bulls. One was purchased specifically for his mobility.
“He got around effortlessly,” Mr Russ said.
“The other was because of his thickness. He was our pick bull because of this thickness.”
They chose the bulls for two different reasons. They are going to two different types of country.
Mr Dywer runs 500 breeders over a few properties. As repeat buyers they liked this sale as the vendor was easy to deal with and always willing to help out.
The sale draft included seven yearling bulls which topped at $9000 and averaged $7571.
The top priced yearling was Waitara Index M50 (AI) who is a V A R Index 3282 son, he weighed 533 kilograms. His EBVs are rated in the top five per cent for retail beef yield and 10pc for eye muscle area.
Steven Chase, Waitara Angus, Trangie was really happy with their sale.
“There were a good range of prices and the good bulls sold well,” He said.
“The top priced bull is as good a bull that I have ever bred.”
“There were plenty of repeat buyers and some new buyers too, I believe that about three quarters of the bulls went to repeat buyers .”

John Settree, Landmark Stud Stock said the sale had a great clearance and a very healthy average.
“It shows that the genetic packages in terms of what the Chase family are doing here have great raw data and great figures,”
“There is a lot of commercial attributes based on carcase, yield and phenotype that works well here.”
“The 100 per cent clearance shows that commercially people are accepting of the Waitara program.”
The sale was settled by Landmark Wilson Russ Warren with John Settree, Landmark Stud Stock Dubbo, taking control of the bids.
