With 1401 grown cattle yarded at Wodonga, and dominated by black cattle, the market was quoted as “being fully firm on current vales”, by Paull and Scollard, Wodonga director, Steve Paull.
“There were reduced numbers compared to recent sales, which could be due to good rain in eastern districts and might account for producers holding onto stock in anticipation of finishing them in the spring,” Mr Paull said.
“Prices were pretty solid considering there has been a readjustment of about 25 percent over the past six months, but people can still operate at this level.”
Mr Paull noted the quality of the yarding was very good and the better pens attracted a lot of interest.
Steers sold from $1320 for a pen of 20 Angus weighing 406 kilograms to $810, while lighter steers sold from $695 to $740.
Heifers sold from $1090 to $725, while lighter weights topped at $670.
PTIC heifers sold to $1730, while cows with calves ranged from $2210 to $1365.
In the steer offering, good sales were recorded by Michael Wood, Talgarno, Victoria, who sold eight Angus, weighing 396kg for $1250, while Nellshire Pty Lyd, Urana, sold 14 Angus weighing 375kg for $1165 and Frank and Pam McFarland, Bethanga, Vic, sold 18 Angus, Scotts-blood, 10 months weighing 369kg for $1245.
Among the good sales of heifers, BE and JA Elliot, “Talgarno Park”, Talgarno, Vic, received $1090 for their pen of 16 Herefords, weighing 368kg, while Bond Pastoral Co, Howlong, sold 14 Angus, weighing 351kg for $1050.
John and Robyn Hassett, Holbrook sold 12 Hereford heifers PTIC to Table Top Angus bulls and weighing 566kg for $1730, while Graeme Proctor, Kindamindy Pastoral, Bungowannah, sold 16 Chambray cows with Limousin calves for $2210.
Buyers from Narrandera, Benalla, Gippsland and Holbrook competed for the quality offering with local restockers and limited interest from commission agents.
Wodonga agents BUR, Paull and Scollard, Peter Ruaro Rodwells and Schubert Boers conducted the sale.
