EVENNESS of the sale rams was the key to sucess at the Tattykeel 42nd annual Poll Dorset stud sale at Oberon on September 20.
Nineteen stud rams sold of the 25 offered for a 76 per cent clearance and an average of $7105.
Tarcutta based repeat buyer, Tony Rutter, purchased the top price ram, Tattykeel 160402, for $18,000.
The sale topper was an April born ram by Immortal from Tattykeel 110959. He weighed 140 kilograms, measured 59 millimeters in the eye muscle depth (EMD), had an eye muscle width (EMW) of 102mm, an eye muscle area (EMA) of 46.34 centimeters squared and 10mm fat depth.
The 160402 ram was the reserve champion at the NSW Sheep Show.
Running a flock of 250 Poll Dorset ewes with pure Tattykeel blood, Mr Rutter said he has been buying Tattykeel rams for such a long time he needed a little bit more volume in his rams this year.
“I have been focusing on shape and early finishing which this ram is, but he has a bit more volume about him as well. He is a nice stretchy ram,” he said.
“He will compliment my ewes big time. He is just the ram I need this year.”
The second top price ram was Tattykeel 160117, bought for $17,000 by Glencorrie Pty Ltd, Maitland, South Australia, and Sam and Danielle Short, Parndanda, SA.
Sired by Immortal and from Tattykeel 130032, the ram had a successful show career being the supreme exhibit at the NSW Sheep Show and the reserve champion at Sydney Royal.
Used in stud, the ram weighed 151kg, measured 61mm EMD, 112mm EMW, had an EMA of 52.61cm2 and a fat depth of 13mm.
Also securing the top price ewe for $900 repeat buyers, Glencorrie Pty Ltd, took home a total of 13 ewes averaging $662.
Thirty nine stud ewes sold of the 40 offered for a 98 pc clearance and a $544 average. The single passed in ewe sold privately after the conclusion of the auction.
Multiple buyers included Agri Holdings, Orange, who purchased one ram for $7000 and 17 ewes for a top of $550, averaging $459 and Kate Johnson, Junee, bought six ewes for a top of $600 and an average of $550.
Tattykeel stud co-principal Graham Gilmore, Oberon, said there were a lot of repeat clients and they were pretty happy with the $7105 average
“Ewes sold well, the sale was overall pretty similar to other years,” Mr Gilmore said.
“I think most people were pretty happy with the purchases they got and because of the evenness of a lot of the rams, there wasn’t a lot of competition in the later rams - because they were so even, it didn’t matter if buyers missed that one, they would get the next one.”
Landmark Bathurst was the selling agent on the day with Glasser Total Sale Management agent Miles Pfitzner, Adelaide, SA, as the auctioneer.
