Perhaps reflecting tough seasonal conditions on the southern tablelands, there was a very mixed quality yarding of 798 cattle at the Yass store cattle sale last Friday, with values trending dearer for those with breeding and condition, while lighter conditioned pens were sold but at a lower price.
Agstock, Yass livestock manager Sam Hunter noted it was an ordinary yarding but pointed out the better cows with calves sold very well.
“The average cows with calves were certainly buyable, with the better end of the weaner steers and heifers sold to a dearer trend,” he said.
Some 210 cows with calves at foot were yarded and a very mixed quality offering of mostly light one and two score weaners were offered alongside a small but good run of Angus yearling heifers, and 50 very light bull calves.
The better shaped and muscled weaner steers sold from $740 to $1,025 or 350 to 373 cents a kilogram.
Medium weight heifers sold from $600 to $900 which equated to 260c/kg to 290c/kg.
The pen of yearling steers sold for $830 (277c/kg) and Angus heifers sold to $1,000.
The light bull calves sold between $460 and $690.
Murray Grey heifers with their first calf reached $2,175 while most other cow and calf units ranged from $1,600 to $1,800.
In a limited offering of young steers with quality, Graham Privett, “Glenleigh”, Yass sold 13 Angus steers weighing 285kg sold for $1020, while Timoru Pastoral Co, Windellama sold 21 Angus steers for $1025.
Among the pens of heifer weaners offered, G and A Hawke, Tarago sold Angus heifers to $1000, while “Bundanon”, Nowra received $865 for their 16 Poll Hereford heifers, 12 – 13 months (288c/kg).
Cows with calves attracted some attention with Graham and Pam Hawke, “Platinum Park”, Tarago sold 18 Angus, three to five years for $1840, while M and L Barron, Koorowatha sold 12 mixed-age Angus for $1610, and Peter and Lianne Whittaker, Gunning sold five Angus for $1775. .
Top priced cows with calves at $2175 was achieved for the ten Murray Greys, two and half years with Limousin calves account K and R Lambkin.
