Remembrance Day ceremonies are mainly organised by returned service persons or more senior members of the local community, but not so at Stuart Town.
The Anzac Day Committee is made up of four members, three from the age of 30, and one older at about 60 who organise both Anzac Day and Remembrance Day events.
This year to commemorate the refurbishment of the Memorial Gates, the War Memorial setting and remembrance garden in the main street, committee members, brothers Sam and Ben McGregor, their aunty Marie McGregor and Kylie Preston have organised a remembrance walk starting at 9.30am on Saturday, followed by the ceremony, then a “Golden Oldies” cricket match and later a night of music and dancing at the Ironbark Inn.
All funding for the refurbishment came from local, Wellington and Orange private donations and without the help of council or government grants, according to Sam McGregor.
Eumungerie
Fundraising for the new Cenotaph at Eumungerie began with Frank Dunn conducting chook and meat raffles at The Drovers Dog Tavern in 2005 and later with council, state and federal government grants and 6500 bricks layed by a local bricky. The new memorial was unveiled in 2010.
This year the Eumungerie ceremony will commence at 10am with speeches and wreath laying and one minute’s silence on the 11th hour.
