Gavin and Caspar McDonald, “Aberdeen”, Laggan, have won this year’s hotly contested Crookwell Merino Flock Ewe Competition.
The winners were announced at the Crookwell Show last Sunday in front of a large crowd.
Their Carrabungla-blood maiden ewes picked up the spring shorn section of the competition on the way to the major award.
The McDonalds won the spring shorn section last year.
Second in the spring shorn section this year were Anthony and Michelle Selmes, “Glenayr”, Wheeo, with John and Michael Lowe, “Innisvale”, Crookwell, in third place and Scott Kensit, “Hollywood”, Crookwell, fourth.
The long-wool section was won by Brad and Maria Cartwright, “Kempton”, Fullerton (Thalabah blood), with Brian and Helen Anderson, “Lower Sylvia Vale”, Binda, in second spot, Dan Fitzell, “Flowerburn”, Peelwood, third and Shannon Arnall, “Carinya”, Laggan, fourth.
The Australian Wool Network Award, which acknowledges the ongoing support and commercial improvement of a flock, went to Tony and Natalie Hewitt, “Galmara”, Grabben Gullen.
Future Development Award was won by Emily and Pat Carlon, “Lower Sylvia Vale”, Binda.
This year’s competition, judged by Craig Wilson, Wilson and Associates, Wagga Wagga, and Matt Coddington, Roseville Park stud, Dubbo, attracted 23 flocks and keen interest among the district’s woolgrowers.
