St Johns College, Dubbo, has done it again taking home the grand champion carcase title for the seventh time with one of their Limousin steers.
The grand champion carcase went to an export steer with tag number 504 that had a liveweight of 572 kilograms and was placed second in the schools export steer class before taking it a step further and winning the entire carcase section.
With a total point score of 91 points out of a possible 100, the steer had a carcase weight of 354.5kg and dressing percentage of 62 per cent. It received full points for market specifications and saleable meat yield with a P8 fat depth of 13mm, rib fat depth of 10mm and eye muscle area (EMA) of 115 centimetres squared.
It was bred by Peter Kylstra from Progress Limousin stud, Yanco, and was picked up by the school at the Limousin Youth Camp held at Parkes in July last year.
The 16-month-old steer was by American sire, Wulfs Xcellsior X252X, from Progress Collies Magic K4.
St Johns College ag teacher, Ben Toll, Dubbo, said the steer was an easy-doing animal fed on the St Johns College’s special ration. It had previously been used by students at the Western Group 11 final in January.
They exhibited four steers in the hoof and hook competition with the carcase winning steer being prepared by student, Georgia Brown, and paraded by Jorgia Scott.
Claiming the reserve champion title on 89 points, close behind the champion carcase, was Brisbane Waters Secondary College, Umina, and Ben Toll, Sheraton Limousins, Dubbo, with their export Limousin steer they won grand champion steer on the hoof with.
The tag 518 Limousin steer had a carcase weight of 355.5kg, dressing 60.9pc. It scored full points for the market specifications section with a P8 fat depth of 15mm and a rib fat depth of 9mm but lost four points for EMA with a measurement of 98cm2.
Wagga Wagga Christian College placed first in the heavyweight section with their Angus steer tag number 525. On the hoof, this steer placed first in the school heavy domestic section and was the overall reserve champion school steer.
With a total score of 88 points, the Angus steer had a carcase weight of 482kg, dressing 56.6pc, and a P8 fat depth of 9mm, rib fat depth of 7mm and an EMA of 87cm2.
In second place was a Limousin steer, tag 512, exhibited by Keajura Park Show Team, Tarcutta, with a score of 87 points. It had a carcase weight of 277.5kg dressing 58.8pc with a fat depth of 7mm at the P8 site and 6mm over the rib and an EMA of 80cm2.
The middle weight section was won by Yass High School with their Square Meater, entry tag 534. It placed second in the school medium domestic section on the hoof but with a point score of 86.5 over the hook, easily beat the live class winner.
It had a carcase weight of 230.5kg, dressing percentage of 56.8pc, P8 fat depth of 5mm, rib fat depth of 5mm and an EMA of 80cm2.
Second place in the middle weight section went to the Limousin heifer, tag 519, that won the live class with a weight of 438kg. The heifer scored 82.5 points over the hook with a carcase weight of 250.5kg, a dressing percentage of 57.2pc and fat measurements of 11mm at the P8 site and 11mm over the rib with an EMA of 90cm2.
