THE Dubbo school steer showing powerhouse, St Johns College has taken another grand champion steer title with its heavy weight school steer at the Sydney Royal Show on Friday.
The Limousin steer nicknamed Max scanned an even 11 millimeters of fat on both the rib and rump and tipped the scales at 542 kilograms.
Max had a stellar show ring career before coming to Sydney having already taken out champion titles at Canberra Royal Show, Coonabarabran Show and the Western Zone judging competition at Dubbo.
The steer had been on the schools special feed mix for 130 days with a daily weight gain of 1.42kg/day.
It was bred by the Kirk family from Wilworril Limousin stud, Rylstone and Peak Hill, who have had multiple wins at Sydney Royal with steers over the years.
Reserve champion school steer was exhibited by Calrossy Anglican School, Tamworth, and bred by Goodman and Newberry.
Also a Limousin, the steer weighed in at 487kg and scanned 10mm on the rump and 8mm on the rib for fat.
In the open competition, the lightweight title went to Red Bend Catholic College, Forbes, with a Limousin steer bred by the Kirk family from Wilworril Limousin stud, Rylstone.
It tipped the scales at 365kg with a rump/rib fat scan of 7mm.
Middleweight champion, in a huge class, went to a Limousin steer bred and exhibited by brother and sister partnership, Ryan and Rachel Relf, Ryradan Park Limousins, Wingham.
The steer nicknamed Ned weighed 492kg, having been on feed for 120 days, and fat scanned 11mm on the rump and 7mm on the rib.
Champion heavyweight steer was also bred by the Kirk family from Wilworril Limousin stud, Rylstone, and exhibited by St Johns College, Dubbo.
The 570kg Limousin had a slightly better growth rate than the grand steer having been on the same feed for the same amount of time.
It had a rump/rib fat scan of 12mm/11mm.
