IT seems vendors are keen to get in on the record-breaking action at the Wagga sheep and lamb sale with a whopping 44,510 going under the hammer.
And those wanting to see records were not disappointed. The Australian record price of $281.20 (set last week) for extra-heavies was equaled again and new-season lambs entered the market with a bang to make a high of $200, which is believed to be the top price paid for this category.
Despite the interest in the extra-heavy lambs there was also good results recorded for lighter Merino lambs.
In fact, Merino lambs, estimated to weigh 28-kilograms dressed and with a $25 skin, made $235.20. And this occurred with limited restocker activity.
The top price of the day for extra-heavy lambs was set by Peter Yates, his brother Mark and son Tom of “Windana”, Yerong Creek.
The lambs went under the hammer with Landmark Wagga’s auctioneer Peter Cabot taking the bids.
Peter and Tom Yates were at the market and Peter said it was an excellent reward for the effort they had put into the industry over the years.
The Yates name is well-known in the rural industry and the family also runs the Barwon Poll Dorset and White Suffolk Stud.
To get the lambs up to the desired weight Mr Yates said they had been run on a lucerne paddock and were also supplementary fed with grain in feeders.
“I think it is fantastic to be able to get these rewards … it also gives us a little bit of optimism about the future as well,” he said.
“We are being rewarded for what we produce.”
