Firearms owners across NSW are being reminded that a state-wide firearms amnesty ends this weekend.
Anyone with an unregistered firearm or firearm-related item in their possession will have the opportunity to legally dispose of, or register it without penalty, until Sunday September 30.
Oxley Police District Inspector Roger Best said it’s important illegal firearms are removed from the streets.
“It’s often people with no ill intent that are in possession of these, however it’s imperative we know the firearms in our community are safely secured, stored and properly licensed,” he said.
“If police find persons in possession of a firearm then action will be taken, but, if a person finds themselves in possession for whatever reason they should call police and organise to have it surrendered.”
The amnesty was launched following the success of last year’s national campaign which netted more than 25,000 firearms and firearm-related parts for destruction, sale and registration across NSW.
Firearms and firearm-related items can be surrendered at licensed firearm dealers and police stations.
