An aging coastal brumby, the last of a once large mob that roamed the heath country of Yuraygir National Park, east of Grafton, was this week euthanised by a veterinarian who, on the advice of the RSPCA, declared the piebald stallion suffering from insurmountable pain.
The last brumby was already an element of local folklore, with the Brooms Head bowling club adopting “Wildfire” as their mascot.
"Despite all manner of community care, including twice daily feeding and pain medication, he is struggling to maintain body condition, has developed skin ailment and is less able to express normal equine behaviour,” said an official statement from the Grafton-based Veterinarian. “Limited treatment options have now been exhausted.”
In 2013 Wildfire sired a colt with similar markings after romancing a mare from Taloumbi, south of Angourie.
