Lockhart will be home to a bronze sculpture of Tim Fischer

Planning for the unique life-size bronze sculpture was discussed with Mr Fischer before his death and now the instigators of the project are letting the public know about the plans.

Lockhart Progress Association president, Myra Jenkyn said, said it was hoped the project could be completed within 12 months.

She recounted a recent conversation with Mr Fischer about the plans for the sculpture. Mrs Jenkyn said he was supportive of the concept but did comment that it was probably one of the most unusual requests he had received for a while when she raised the idea.

The work is anticipated to be similar to the Headlie Taylor sculpture at Henty in the neighbouring Greater Hume Council.

"He was such a loved and respected character," she said.

"He worked for all of us, not just his party."

Mrs Jenkyn said Lockhart and the surrounding communities were fortunate to have Mr Fischer's support over the years.

To fit with Mr Fischer's love for trains the sculpture will be at the Lockhart Railway Station.

It is likely to depict him waving his characteristic Akubra hat.

Meanwhile, Mr Fischer will take one last journey on a train on Thursday in a fitting farewell for the former deputy prime minister.

Mr Fischer's family confirmed on Sunday that his coffin will make its way from The Rock railway station to Albury railway station, arriving at 9.30am.

"Well wishers are invited to watch Tim's train as it makes its way on the main line into Albury at 9.30am," the statement said.

"Tim's train will remain at the Albury railway station until 11am and members of the public will have an opportunity to pay their respects to Tim from the platform.

"Attendees are asked to refrain from taking photographs to respect the privacy of Tim and his family."

The 73-year-old father of two and AC died on Wednesday night following treatment at the Albury-Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre.

The public are invited to attend a state funeral which will be held at the Albury Entertainment Centre at 1pm with Lester and Son Funeral Directors asking those attending to arrive early and be seated by 12.15pm, doors open 11.30am.
