A HEAVYWEIGHT Murray Grey that failed to place on the hoof has taken out the grand champion carcase trophy and picked up a gold medal in the process at the Sydney Royal Show.
The carcase was exhibited by Lachlan and Kate James, Wallawong Murray Greys, Gunnedah.
It scored 93.5 points out of 100 and its carcase tipped the scales at 303.5kg after dressing at 55 per cent.
The carcase measured 14 millimetres of fat at the P8 site and scored maximum points for both rib eye area (REA) (116 square centimetres) and rib fat (8mm).
The carcase had Wallawong breeding all the way being by Wallawong Ultramodern from Wallawong Miss Impressive 30.
The champion middleweight carcase was a Limousin exhibited by Clark Livestock Company.
The carcase dressed at 60.5pc and weighed in above the optimum weight range at 289kg, but still picked up a score of 91.5 points.
It had a REA of 97 square centimetres and measured a fat depth of 10mm/9mm at P8/rib.
The steer was bought by Wingham Beef Exports for 250 cents a kilogram ($1195) having won a second ribbon in its class on the hoof.
It was by Premier Dodgeram A78.
The champion and reserve lightweight carcase both came from the same hoof class and once again only 0.5 of a point separated them in the chiller.
A Limousin from Wellington High School snuck in with 90.5 points to claim champion lightweight, while the grand steer on the hoof (exhibited by Jeremy and Philippa Walsh, Ruby Park Limousins, Dubbo, and Don and Sarah Riley, Oakvale Limousins, Tamworth) scored 90 points giving it the reserve lightweight place.
The Wellington High School carcase was high yielding with a dressing percentage of 63.6pc and a carcase weight of 250kg.
It scored maximum points for market specifications and saleable meat yield including a measure of 8mm/5mm for P8/rib fat depth.
The meaty carcase had a REA for 97 square centimetres and was by Allstar Berston B7 from a commercial Limousin cow.
It was bought at auction by Nathan Fathers Butchery, Dural, for 240c/kg ($943).
