A FLEECE has been auctioned for three times its value at the Sydney Royal Show today - all in the name of charity.
The fleece, donated by a Brewarrina farmer, sold for 2400 cents a kilogram to Modiano.
The fleece was sold to raise money for Heidi Hawkins, the two-year-old daughter of Walgett couple Scott Hawkins and Karyn Barrett.
Heidi has bilateral Wilms Tumours and her chemotherapy is coinciding with the birth of the family's second child.
The funds raised, of which about $17,000 came from the sale of the fleece, will assist with medical and other expenses incurred while Heidi is receiving treatment in Sydney. A donation will also be made to the Ronald McDonald House in Westmead.
Buyers Phil McAleer and Stuart Clayton, of Modiano, said the company's London office had given them the go ahead before the sale.
"The show is about two things, the country and family," Mr Clayton said.
"Modiano is a family company which has been buying wool for 60 years. So the London office was more than happy to help out."
The fleece was auctioned by McDonald and Co auctioneer Ian Sharp who worked in the lead-up to the auction to ensure all bidders knew where the money was going to.
"I thought we'd see it go for about 1000c/kg which would have been good, so to see it make more than 2000c/kg is great," Mr Sharp said.
