A DEARER market trend of as much as $50 was recorded at last week's special calf and store sale at Cooma thanks to good prospects of rain and falls on the day itself.
That rain helped push the weaner steers to $610, yearling steers to a top of $750 and cows with calves to an overall sale top of $840.
All up, 1700 head were yarded at last Wednesday's sale comprising 200 grown store cattle and 1500 weaners.
John Mooney and Company principal John Mooney, Cooma, said compared to the previous week's sale the market was considerably dearer by $20 to $50 a head and weaner heifers recordied the best price rises.
"It was a good quality yarding of genuine July- to September-drop calves," Mr Mooney said.
"As a result of the dry seasonal conditions on the Monaro for the past six months, the calves were considerably lighter than last year."
The weaner steers mostly sold from $300 to a top of $610.
Weaner heifers ranged from $350 to $430, while the smaller steers and heifers ranged from $200 to $300.
Yearling steers, aged from 15 to 18 months, sold from $500 to $750, while yearling heifers sold from $450 to $470.
Cows with calves sold to a sale top of $840.
The top pen of weaner steers were 11- to 12-month-old Herefords, sold by Mike and Sue Litchfield, "Wondallee", Cooma, for $610.
The top pen of heifer calves was sold by John Irvin, Berridale; the Angus/ Santa Gertrudis heifers made $430.
Erindale Partners, Nimmitabel and Davey Cattle Company, Delegate, both recorded sales of $425 for pens of Angus heifer calves, August/September drop.
Davey Cattle Company also sold 31 Angus weaner steers, August/ September drop, for $590.
Michael Green, "Boudjah", Cooma, sold seven- to eight-month-old Hereford steers for $535.
John Irvin, Berridale sold the top pen of weaner heifers; they were Angus/Santa and made $430.
Louis and Margaret Brooks, "Glenroy", Berridale, were dispersing their Hereford herd given the the pending sale of their property.
Their Arable-blood Hereford cows sold from $490 to $530.
Buyers attended from Melbourne, Albury, Corryong, Narrandera, Wagga Wagga, Tintaldra, Gundagi, Young, Goulburn, Queanbeyan, Bombala, Bega and the local area.
The sale was conducted by Landmark, Boller and Company, and John Mooney and Company, all of Cooma.
