CROSSING his fingers and hoping for the best paid dividends for Charolais breeder Graeme Cook who topped both the steer and heifer markets at Wodonga today.
Mr Cook (pictured with his daughter Ellen), operates Rangan Charolais stud at Sandy Creek, Victoria, sold exceptional pens of Charolais/Angus cross steers and heifers to a top price of $780.
There were about 4000 Hereford, black baldy and Euro cross mixed see weaner steers and heifers penned.
It was variable market today with lighter weight steers often commanding more money than their heavier brothers when sold side by side.
Cattle were secured by buyers from a far a field as southern Queensland, down to Ebor and Armidale in the New England, while central west buyers were active on the cross bred heifers.
Local restockers from the Upper Murray also competed for steers.
Three days of females sales will be held at Wodonga yards next week, they will run from January 16 to 18.
