The Wodonga cattle sale was described as “equal to shade dearer than last week” by Paull and Scollard, Wodonga director Stephen Paull, when 2000 head of mixed quality cattle met strong demand.
“The comment from buyers was suggesting the market was stronger,” Mr Paull said“Particularly the heifer section which comprised a big percentage of our yarding and the demand was strong for the better types.”
Mr Paull noted the buying gallery was still active right to the end, which indicates continued interest in cattle, even for the lighter types.
Local restockers and feedlots competed with commission buyers who were still active on suitable pens.
A feature was the dispersal of their Santa Gertrudis herd, by the Gentle family, “Worthington”, Illabo.
Their pen of 14 Santa Gertrudis heifers, 24 months, depastured to Santa bull and weighing 501kg sold for $1580.
A line of 25 Angus cows with calves and rejoined to Lawson Angus bull sold for $1860.
Older steers sold well, with IR and JE Allan, Whorouly, Victoria, receiving $1455 for 61 Herefords weighing 438kg:.
In the well represented offering of young steers, the Jarrick family, from Jindera, sold nine Shorthorn steers, Spry’s blood, weighing 388kg for $1190: and Russell and Linda Chapple, “Mallawa”, Gerogery, sold 19 Hereford steers, weighing 331kg for $1140.
Among the good pens of heifers yarded, Doug Stevenson, from Tallangatta sold 48 Angus heifers, weighing 346kg for $1065.
Wodonga agents, Paull and Scollard, Peter Rurao Livestock, Schubert and Boers, and Brian Unthank Rural conducted the sale.
