MAYBE the fever of the Mountain Cattle sales flowed over the hill to Wodonga on Thursday, or it might have been the weather bureau’s prediction of 20-40mm of rain the next day, but competition was very good.
The independent agents off a relatively small penning of 1807 head, which included 96 cows and calves. A couple of property sales saw two dispersals in this market, but cows and calves, and PTIC females only just held their trade value. There was one exception with DS&CG Varker, Chiltern, selling 22 Angus cows with Jarobee blood calves at-foot (CAF), and re-depastured to the same for July-August calving. Three for one seemed a good option, and these cows and calves sold for $2040.

A feature line from Glencoe Pastoral Co, Holbrook, NSW, saw 67 young calves by Webb Black Simmental and Hick’s Composite bulls, sell from $815-$1055, equalling up to 367c/kg lwt. MJ&JE Mitchell, Bethanga, sold 39 Angus steers from $1000-$1035.

Hereford steers sold to less enthusiasm than in the mountains. FE&FJ McCormack, Bullioh, sold 24 Hereford steers from $1080-$1160. Deloraine Rural, Beveridge, sold 77 Poll Hereford steers from $850-$935, which was quite a good sale, or 334 and 342c/kg lwt. Millbrook Stud, Alexandra, sold 41 Angus-Hereford and Hereford calves, in dry, store condition, from $510-$634 (equal to 406 and 411c/kg).
