WELLINGTON’S Mount Arthur Challenge is back for its third year and will be conducted on Sunday, July 17.
Following on from a successful, albeit freezing, event last year, the Mt Arthur Challenge Committee is bringing the popular event back.
The challenge will continue with its three-event format, being the 9km and 5km runs as well as the 50km road bike ride with a number of prizes on offer to the winning competitors in each category.
Committee secretary and Mt Arthur Trust member Erica Baigent said the almost Antarctic conditions of last year’s event was a genuine challenge, however she was impressed by participants’ commitment to attend.
“We always knew the mountain was difficult, but the addition of rain, wind and low temperatures really tested everyone – especially our volunteers,” she said.
“However, the satisfaction the participants felt when they crossed the finish line and collected their medals was palpable.
“The feedback we received also highlighted the enjoyment competitors got out of the challenge and has really encouraged us to continue as an annual winter event.”
Now in its third year, the committee has added a team category to each of the races.
Teams must consist of at least four people who are participating in the same event.
“During the past two years, we have noticed there are a lot of people who come to the challenge as a group, so we thought why not make it that bit more exciting for them and open up the team category,” Mrs Baigent said.
Whatever race people choose to compete in, Mrs Baigent advises that now is the time to start training.
“The 9km run is deemed as the most challenging - ascending the side of Mt Arthur is not for the feint hearted - but the satisfaction felt at the finish line is worth the effort.
“The shorter 5km run doesn’t ascend the mountain which makes it a friendlier option for competitors and families to enter, while the 50km bike ride takes place on sealed roads and also starts/finishes at the Wellington Showground.”
Early bird registration is now open, with standard registration commencing from May 1.
