A HIGH quality yarding of 2057 weaners attracted strong competition from southern Queensland and northern NSW at the annual Glen Innes Blue Ribbon Weaner Sale on Friday, pushing prices to a top of $1285 a head for Angus steer weaners.
The yarding included about 1100 steers and 950 heifers, with lotfeeders and backgrounders bidding for steers and restockers strong int he heifer section.
Light weaner steers weighing less than 300 kilograms topped at 351c/kg and averaged 330c/kg and heavy steers weighing more than 330kg sold from 330c/kg to 335c/kg.
Robert Pietsch, Yarraford Station, Glen Innes, had the champion pen of steers, which sold for $958 to Peter Hancox, Toowoomba.
Barry and Julianne Grob, “Riverdene”, Shannon Vale, sold Angus weaner steers weighing 322kg to Whyalla beef for $1078 and black baldy steers averaging 346kg to Bob Jamieson Agencies, Inverell, for $1098.
Robert and Kay Schroder’s Charolais-cross steers averaging 328kg sold for $1000, and were purchased by Bob Jamieson Agencies.
Heifers weighed from 200kg to 300kg and sold from 260c/kg to 323c/kg, with strong compeittion for replacement Angus females.
The Grob family’s Angus weaner heifers were the champion heifers and topped the heifer section, selling for $970 to a southern Queensland breeding operation.
Rob Church, “Springfield” Wongwibinda, sold Angus heifers for $824 and Andrew and Tim Grob, Shannon Vale, sold Angus heifers for $948.
Agent Shad Bailey, Colin Say and Company, Glen Innes, said the sale was pleasing considering seasonal conditions.
“Credit must go to all the vendors involved in how their calves presented in what I thought was as good a yarding of weaners we’ve seen for some years,” Mr Bailey said.
