CONFIDENCE in a growing goat market has prompted plans for two new goat abattoirs to be built in NSW.
Abattoirs in Bourke and Blayney are both in the planning stages, giving producers and depot owners more options of where to send goats.
Manager of tourism and development at Bourke Shire Council Phil Johnston said the proposed abattoir at Bourke should be up and running by mid-2017.
The abattoir, which aims to process up to 6000 goats a day and employ 200 people, is expected to be finalised by the end of July, with developers Capra Pty Ltd to begin civil works before Christmas.
Mr Johnston said the developers hoped to take advantage of the proximity to local goat populations.
“Stock won’t have to be trucked as far,” he said. “The town is very positive about the development.”
The proposed goat and sheep abattoir at Blayney, which developers Metziya Pty Ltd says will process up to 4500 animals per day, is in its planning stages, with submissions being reviewed.
