THOUSANDS of punters streamed through the gates of the Katherine Turf Club for one of Katherine’s biggest events of the year.
More than 2000 celebrities, racing fanatics and Katherine locals frocked up for a huge day of racing at the 2016 Katherine Cup.
However, there could only be one Katherine Cup winner and that was Darwin Trainer Kerry Petrick’s Statue of Warriors who left the field behind winning by about seven lengths.
Katherine Turf Club president Duane Barclay said the cup was a huge success after a dry season packed with events.
“I think everyone is a bit tired at this time of the year so we were just pleased to get as many people as we did,” he said.
“We’ve had race days, V8 supercars, Darwin Show, Katherine Show, concerts so it’s a pretty full-on three months when you think about it.”
Mr Barclay said one of the biggest hits of the day was the jumping castle – which was bigger and better than previous years.
“That was the best money we’ve ever spent, the kids were on that all day” he said.
“We’ve had jumping castles in other years but none as good as this years. That bloke said he will be back next year as well.”
