COBAR brumby whisperer Joe Hughes is getting ready to welcome the first lot of trainers for a master class in taming the wild horses.
Mr Hughes, who runs 4BP Horses and said he takes about 70 per cent of horses caught in Kosciuszko National Park, has organised a cooee legends training clinic to share his methods.
“We’re looking for more people to learn the method and take a horse home,” he said.
“They get to save a bit of Australian heritage while they save the environment, so it’s a win-win.”
Mr Hughes, with his daughter Lauren, trains brumbies within a matter of days, and plans to set up a depot for other trainers to make use of them.
“These horses are ready for a child after 30 hours of work. The first brumby we trained, Kosi, went to an eight-year-old boy in Sydney – he was his first horse and was just learning to ride.”
The first five-day training camp is due to be held this month.
