Historic breeds are on display at the Rare Poultry Breeders Association show at Maitland Showground on May 20

The Rare Poultry Breeders Association annual show at Maitland Showground on May 21 will feature 528 birds and it’s expected to draw huge crowds. 

Show secretary Amanda Winney said it was the second largest gathering of rare poultry the show had seen since it began 12 years. 

She welcomed the influx and said rising interest in rare breeds was key to preserving them for future generations. 

“This is what we need and what we’ve been hoping for; the more people that have rare breeds the better chance we have of getting them off the rare breeds list,” Ms Winney said.

“Sometimes there’s that many people trying to see the birds that they can hardly move in the pavilion – it’s something people want to come and see.

“The weather is going to be good, there’s only a small amount of rain on the forecast, so people should come down and have a look at them.”

The show will start at 9am and finish at 2pm.
