A LIFETIME of dedication to one of the oldest Brtitish breeds continued to be rewarded when Des and Marilyn Stevens, Hallylulya Ryeland stud, Heywood, were complimented by judge James Bond, Cornwall, UK, for the trueness to type of their sheep.
“This is a meat breed and I judged on the characteristics of the breed having meat in all the right places,” Mr Bond said.
“They are certainly bigger that what we have at home.”
Mr Bond drew attention to the ram’s outstanding conformation.
“He is a good solid ram, with a leg in each corner which is what it should have, he stands well and shows himself well,” he said.
The dam of the 11 month old ram had been judged champion ewe at Bendigo for two years in succession.
The reserve champion ram was a younger animal.
“He is perhaps a little more rangy, but is still a good sheep with a good backend, good meat over the loin and over the shoulder which is what we want.”
Grand and reserve grand championship ribbons for the ewe section were awarded to the Stevens family, Hallylulya stud, Heywood.
It was the first time shown for the two year old champion ewe, who is due to lamb in August, and Mr Bond said she was a very feminine type.
