HAPPY Birthday to all southern hemisphere horses last Tuesday, August 1.
This includes value Encosta de Lago young sire, Cardinal Kingdom – a full-brother to Sacred Kingdom – who is standing at Dennis Doble’s Norman Park Stud, just out of Cowra.
A $345,000 yearling when sold at Inglis’ Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, Cardinal Kingdom lived up to his purchase price and made a promising start to his racing career when winning his first appearance.
Illness then struck the chestnut stallion before embarking on another racing campaign one year later.
She has shown no interest in some of her other races, and here she showed no interest at the start, but the 1600m suited. She will probably go to the paddock now, for The Championships next March.

That yielded him a further six other placings, before his racing retirement.
Racing enthusiasts and owners will easily recall the deeds of world renowned galloper Sacred Kingdom, a racing marvel who was honoured with Horse Of The Year in Hong Kong in 2010.
He also was awarded champion sprinter in Hong Kong in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 such was his toughness and superior racing ability.
Cardinal Kingdom, along with Sacred Kingdom, is also a three-year-old brother to dual winning Rainbow Nation who cost his owners $640,000 at an Inglis Easter yearling sale which speaks volumes for their outstanding female family.
The pair was produced from three-time winning mare Courtroom Sweetie, dam of six to race, all winners with another one of them being the stakes-placed Opter, who had seven wins.
By champion Zeditave, Courtroom Sweetie is a full-sister to dual Melbourne group 2 winner Love Of Mary.
Friskee One sprouts wings in spectacular win
WHILE the win of promising Snitzel three-year-old Calanda in the Ramornie Handicap was a highlight at the Grafton Cup Carnival last month, spare a thought for the success of Friskee One in the Class Two Handicap over 1600 metres on the same day.
Most spectators wrote the mare off after she broke from the barriers a casual 10 lengths behind the field and showed little interest in the race.
Jockey Anthony “Choc” Cavallo pumped the filly up to tack onto the field and was still near the rear at the top of the straight.
However Friskee One sprouted wings down the straight to overhaul her eight opponents to win by a neck.
After the race, amazement was on most people’s faces including Friskee One’s longtime breeder, owner and trainer Neil Osborne.
“She has shown no interest in some of her other races, and here she showed no interest at the start, but the 1600m suited,” Neil said after the race.
“She will probably go to the paddock now, for The Championships next March.”
Frisbee One was bred by Neil and his wife Denise at their Sutton property, Mane Lodge.
When the pair did not get the price they wanted for the Not A Single Doubt filly when offered at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, they decided to race her themselves, and for good results.
Produced from the winning Royal Academy mare Friskee, Friskee One has won three races and is one to note for future races.
Krupt heading to Tassie for stud duties
THE Grafton Cup Carnival also provided a feature double for chestnut Flying Spur stallion Krupt, who is on the move to continue his stud duties in Tasmania.
Transferring to the southern Tasmanian property Kingsley Park, Krupt scored a double earlier in the month when five-year-old mare Nardoo won over 1206m, and four-year-old mare Termele won the feature John Carlton Cup.
For good measure four-year-old Krupt gelding Mr McBat convincingly won the $50,000 Grafton Toyota South Grafton Cup.
Australian pedigree brightens Tattersalls
INTERESTING results were seen at the annual Tattersalls July Sale at Newmarket, England last month with two females who possess strong Australian pedigree relations, and fetched massive prices.
Among the consignment from Godolphin was Time Check, a five-year-old daughter of Shamardal who topped the sale’s first session at 300,000 guineas.
Tracing back to champion Australian racefilly Triscay, Time Check is also a sister to the dam of recent Godolphin star galloper Astern, an ATC Golden Rose-G1 winner by Medaglia d’Oro, and who begins his first stud season in Aberdeen this year.
The top price of the three-day auction was for Asanta Santa, a daughter of multiple champion sire Galileo and who sold for 330,000 guineas.
Irish-bred Asanta Santa is a daughter of Australian bred Danehill group 3 winning mare Milanova, who holds the Australian broodmare record top sale price at public auction of $5 million, achieved at Inglis’ 2008 Australian Broodmare Sale at Randwick.
Milanova is a sister to former Coolmore Stud stallion Holy Roman Emperor, now at stud in Queensland.
This massive $5 million price was equalled at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale when the Redoute’s Choice half-brother to mighty champion mare Black Caviar sold in front of a packed auction house at Randwick. Sadly the colt never made it to racing dying mysteriously of a reported white spider bite late that year.
