Pemcaw Merino stud held its 41st annual hogget ram sale last Friday to a good number of both new and long term repeat buyers.
They offered 77 rams with an 84 per cent clearance, topping at $6500 and averaging $1914.
In a tough season the rams average weight was 98.2 kilograms and an 18.4 micron wool which surpassed last years statistics.
The top priced ram, a 110 kilogram, growing 18.9 Micron wool, standard deviation (SD) of 4 micron, coefficient of variation (CV) of 21.2 per cent and a comfort factor (CF) of 99 pc went to Peter Gallagher, “Tomimbil”, Turill.
He thought he was the best sheep in the shed and would do any flock a lot of good.
“You don’t see many sheep like him any more,” said Mr Gallagher, who has been dealing with Pemcaw Merinos since the 1960s.
Volume buyer, Peter Ponder, “Emaroo Station”, Bourke, liked that they were a good even line of sheep.
“I have been purchasing Pemcaw rams since 1965, we purchase every year,” he said
His draft of 12 rams averaged $1166 with a top of $2000 three times.
Lou Armstrong, stud principal of Pemcaw, thought the sale was very strong.
“The top priced ram was by a sire that we bred, Pemcaw 2.17 who is breeding very well for us.”
“We purchased shares in a $30,000 Moorundie Park Poll ram two years ago and the first of his progeny is at this sale. He has also bred particularly well for us.”
“This sale was up on last year. there was great value for us and for our clients.” he said
Auctioneer Paul Dooley said there was great support from return clients.
“The sheep are performing very well and they cut a lot of wool. They have a great body shape and do well for their purchasers,” he said.
Bill Gibbs, Schute Bell, felt it was a strong sale, with a lot of repeat buyers and a few new ones too.
“Everybody was very happy with the sale.” he said.
The sale was conducted by Schute Bell and AWN Livestock with Paul Dooley as auctioneer.
