GROWING up on a farm at Oberon, there were motorbikes and horses to amuse yourself.
Eventually Kristie McKinnon opted for motorbikes because they were less maintenance.
Since then she raced roadbikes, tried enduro events and has finally settled on trials.
There’s a few advantages to trials, she says, you don’t break as many bones and, for motorsport, it doesn’t cost too much.
For a top of the line trials bike, which weighs in about 68 to 69 kilograms, you’re looking at about $9500 to $10,000 brand new and a good secondhand bike will set you back about $6000.
Driven by a 300cc two-stroke engine they’re geared low, so most of the tricks Kristie is pulling are done in third gear.
“And I only go through about one set of tyres a year,” says the 32-year-old aircraft engineer.
“And you can play on one log for hours.”
There’s a lot of girls in the crew at Flair Riders, who are performing four times today at the Australian National Field Days at Borenore today.
Boss Rhiannon Buchanan is from Beaudesert, Queensland, and her partner Jack is from Lismore.
Together they own an earthmoving outfit in Lismore, but many weekends are spent travelling to shows at F1 Grand Prix events, 4WD camping shows, or the Moto GP at Phillip Island.
So they’re all from the country?
“Yeah, country kids do way better,” says Rhiannon.
They spend a long time on the road, catch many them at the Northern Inland Expo at Inverell on November 18 and 19.
