Wyatt Thompson was a high achiever in stud cattle and equestrian sports

The foundation of the now celebrated Millah Murrah stud were females purchased at the Wallah dispersal.

In 2003 Wyatt and Winsome’s son, Ross, and his wife, Dimity, retained 75 heifer weaners from the Millah Murrah herd from which they have built Millah Murrah up to produce 400 registered calves annually.

The Thompson family donated to Angus Australia the Wyatt Thompson trophy for the highest selling Angus bull and the Winsome Thompson Trophy for the highest selling Angus female.

Both trophies are currently held by Millah Murrah Angus.

Stud cattle weren’t Mr Thompson only claim to fame. He was a member of Australia’s first Olympic equestrian team.

The team represented Australia at the 1956 Olympic Games.

The team’s trainer, Franz Mairinger, had quite a job in the lead up to the games as none of the eventing team (Brian Crago, Ernie Barker and “Bunty” Thompson) had ever done dressage before let alone competed in a three-day event.

Despite the odds, they finished fourth at the 1956 Olympics and set an example for all Australian equestrian teams that have followed.

In 2012 the 1956 eventing team was inducted into the Equestrian Australia Hall of Fame.
