A pioneer of the working cattle dog trialling community, a dedicated horseman and a “true gentleman”, passed away last Friday after a life well lived.
Fraser Ramsey, 88, from Bonalbo, who worked as a livestock agent until his retirement, was best known for involvement in breeding horses and promoting the sport of working cattledog trials. Mr Ramsey was on the Bonalbo show committee when it introduced the sport to Australia in 1950 and was part of the movement that brought a bronze statue of the first winning dog to the township.
Always quick with wit, fellow dog breeder Ben Gould, Greenridge, recalled a man telling Mr Ramsey that his dog was ugly. “I was at a dance once,” he replied to the man, stopping only to raise his walking stick. “The ugliest girl was the best dancer,” to which he put down his cane and kept walking.
